My guinea pigs fighting

I am going to keep two baby male guinea pigs together and I am worried they might fight a lot.

They are from different litters but are related.

They have met before but one of the male's mother started chasing the other male from the other litter around the hutch, head butting him.

Will the male follow his mother and hurt the other guinea pig?

Brankica: I am guessing you plan to keep those two males with the mother?

If so, I am not sure it will work, since she is attacking him.

If you want to keep just the two males, separate the attacked one from the others and after you remove the mother, put those two males together.

The little son won't have the opportunity to pick up the bad behavior and usually two males will get along just fine.

Keeping those two little ones with the mother might not work, because she will hurt him if she keep attacking him.

Hope this answers your question, if not please comment with additional questions/info or contact me.

You Never Know
by: Carrie

Hi Tracey,

I was in a similar situation a while ago. I wanted 2 guinea pigs, and there were 2 males available but only one female.

I did a lot of research and learned that 2 males should get along indefinitely.

Well, they got along great for the first 3 months or so. As they grew, one started chasing and biting the other a lot. It was very aggressive and scary I was worried.

Before long I had 2 enormous guinea pig cages in my family room! Twice the space, and twice the time cleaning. They never had the benefit of company and they didn't seem lonely anyway.

So, be prepared for any changes in circumstances. There are no guarantees they will always get along!

That is right

Thanks for the comment and you are so right. Look at the humans, two brothers/sister can fight a lot, why couldn't two guinea pigs do the same.

In general they should get along, but like said, you never know for sure.

They ARE going to be put together at 4-5 weeks old, shouldn't they be alright and not fight?

What percentage to pull up here?

Let's say you keep them apart and put them together at 5 weeks old.

In general they should get along. They are two males that most of the time get along good.
Stress on "most of the time".

They could get along great, but there is always the possibility for them not to get along so great. So it would just be nice for you to have that little piece of mind ready for that.

You can always put them in two separate cages if they are not getting along well but I am sure you didn't have that in mind. It will take a lot of space and the cleaning will be a real chore.

I really hope you won't have to think about this and that they will behave like any average guinea pigs and get along good!
