My guinea LOVES basil! Is there a limit to how much he can have daily/weekly? & does it cause loose stool or constipation at all?

Vet Suggestion on Feeding Basil to Guinea Pigs

Hi Monique,

Basil is a good food for guinea pigs. It contains vitamin C, which they can’t make on their own.

However, the majority of a guinea pig’s diet should consist of high quality grass hay (e.g., timothy, orchard grass or brome). Hay should be available all the time. The hay can be supplemented with approximately ¼ to ½ cup fresh plant material, primarily dark leafy greens like kale and collard, mustard or dandelion greens with some added sweet peppers, apples, pears, berries, broccoli, cucumbers, parsley, and yes, basil.

By providing a wide-variety of healthy foods, you can ensure that your guinea pig is getting all the nutrients he needs to stay healthy.

Jennifer Coates, DVM
